Writer-director Oscar Ruíz Navia’s debut feature offers an extraordinary glimpse into life within the isolated and ignored black communities along Colombia’s beautiful, unexploited northern Pacific coast. Set in the remote village of La Barra, this semi-mythic narrative highlights an impending dramatic clash between an old world and the new world, represented by this tiny rural community and modernity, respectively. Two intruding white outsiders escalate tensions when they invade the village’s tranquil environs. Daniel (Rodrigo Vélez) is a mysterious stranger trying to escape his past and “El Paisa” (Jaime Andrés Castano) is an opportunistic landowner determined to drive out the native inhabitants in order to build a nearby beach resort. Both of these interlopers encounter “Cerebro” (Arnobio Salazar Rivas), La Barra’s leader, who recognizes what their presence means for the future of his people and who tries his best to adjust to the onslaught of disquieting change and progress.
